China set for new generation of leaders

Observers hopeful next elites will continue to stress growth, stability

Over the coming year, China will embark on its biggest leadership revamp in a decade, elevating hundreds of new decision makers to steer the nation’s political, bureaucratic, military and corporate spheres well into the next 10 years. And while the outcome of the high-stakes transition is shrouded by the vagaries of Communist machine politics, many observers express a degree of confidence that replacing the old-guard elites will be smooth and orderly. “The new leaders–in-waiting are not especially well known to most overseas investors and businesses. However, the overall views and goals of the existing leadership are not especially well known either,” said Rupert Watson, head of asset allocation at U.K.-based Skandia Investment Group.
China’s new generation of leaders seem likely to continue to see economic and employment growth as well as social stability as their key goals, and that in order to achieve those goals, “cooperation with overseas businesses and countries will be critical.” Other observers point to Beijing’s track record in promoting and implementing growth-oriented policies.
