L’Allemagne menace l’Europe, encore une fois

Germany Threatens Europe, Again

Stubborn, domineering, downright unfriendly. All the old stereotypes about the Germans are rising to the surface as frustration grows over their refusal to sign what they regard as a blank check to their less disciplined European neighbors. It seems only fair to add resilient to the list. It is hard not to admire Chancellor Angela Merkel’s stolid refusal to adopt policies she opposes in the face of growing pressure from partners and allies to act to salvage the euro zone. As she said in her latest pronouncement on European policy on Tuesday: “We cannot become involved in things which will — I am firmly convinced — lead to an even bigger disaster than we have today.”
But will the Germans live to regret what some regard as their intransigence in the face of a deepening crisis, or will their insistence on fiscal probity turn out to be the key element in an eventual recovery? Commentators and experts are divided.
