The Nord Stream gas pipeline has been officially opened. But business is not the only motive behind the subsea project. Politicians want to decrease the EU's dependence on gas transit nations like Ukraine and Belarus.
Leaders of Germany, France, the Netherlands, Russia and the European Union gathered on Tuesday to inaugurate the Nord Stream gas pipeline, a controversial 7.4-billion-euro ($10.2-billion) project that links Russia with western Europe beneath the Baltic Sea. These days, the fields of politics and energy are becoming more and more deeply intertwined.
As a result, it can be difficult to tell whether business or geo-political concerns are the main motives driving investment. The Nord Stream gas pipeline is no exception.
